CREATING MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

CASTING OUR SUPPORT TO THOSE WHO SERVED.

The third annual Veterans’ Retreat to Thimble Islands’ Outer Island took place on September 2, bringing together 18 veterans for a memorable day of camaraderie, exploration, music, and fun.

The outing was coordinated through a collaborative effort among Hooks for Heroes, ResilienceInUs.com, Friends of Outer Island, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the Stuart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. Veterans representing the four main branches of the U.S. Armed Services—Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps—enjoyed a day away from their everyday routines while experiencing the natural beauty and history of Outer Island.

In addition to the traditional picnic lunch and island tour, this year’s retreat featured a very special musical experience. We were honored to welcome Jia-yi He, a world-class harmonica virtuoso and winner of prestigious awards in the United States, Europe, and the Far East.

Jia-yi opened the event with a moving rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless the USA,” followed by a selection of other songs that had everyone listening, smiling, and enjoying the afternoon. His performance added a wonderful and unexpected dimension to the retreat.

The veterans were also given a new harmonica, generously provided by KHS Hohner, along with adapted sheet music so they could continue practicing and enjoying their new musical skill long after the retreat ended.

A special thank-you goes to all of the veterans who participated and were willing to try something new, share in the experience, and make the day such a memorable one.

15th Annual Hooks For Heroes CT: A Beautiful, Windy Day Honoring America’s Heroes

The sun was shining over Halloween Yacht Club as captains, volunteers, veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, family members, and supporters gathered for the 15th Annual Hooks For Heroes CT event. While the skies were clear, a strong wind churned the Long Island Sound, creating challenging conditions for everyone who headed out on the water.

Despite the rough seas, the spirit of the day never wavered. Fish were caught, stories were shared, and plenty of great food and drink were enjoyed back at the club. More importantly, the event brought together a remarkable community united by a single purpose—to honor those who have sacrificed so much in service to our nation and our communities.

Hooks For Heroes CT was privileged to recognize veterans representing World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the Global War on Terror. Watching multiple generations of American heroes gather in one place served as a powerful reminder that while the conflicts may change, the courage, selflessness, and dedication of those who answer our nation's call, never do.

We were also proud to honor our first responders, whose service, courage, and dedication continue to protect our communities every day.

Events like this are only possible because of the incredible generosity of the members of Halloween Yacht Club, our captains, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and countless supporters who donate their time, boats, talents, and resources. Their dedication has helped make Hooks For Heroes CT a cherished tradition for fifteen years and has touched the lives of hundreds of veterans, active-duty military members, and their families.

The wind may have made the fishing more challenging, but it could not diminish what truly mattered. The laughter on the docks, the stories shared between generations, the new friendships formed, and the heartfelt appreciation shown throughout the day reminded us all why Hooks For Heroes CT exists.

Together, we continue to honor those who have served—and ensure they know their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
